Dear Math,

It’s been a while. I know you must be wondering what happened all these years. Well, I can’t start talking about our fallout but I want to thank you for the good times we shared. Your logical ideas. Your unwavering commitment to success. Your dedication to every good cause. Your uncommon patience. Your values which many find hard to get. And yes, your dark humour. The hide and seek; they complain about you asking them to find x, but we sought x, y and z; x1, x2,…xn. And we kept loving it.

None compares to you. You sacrificed a lot to make those around you better, and invested so much in their future. It’s ironic that most still return to blame you for their woes. Rather than acknowledge and appreciate your support and advice, they antagonise you because they feared you. They turned their back on you because they were not ready to put in the requisite commitment to make the relationship work.

Today, friends and enemies have found success in various endeavors most of which wouldn’t have happened without the seed you planted earlier on. I will forever be grateful for sharing your time with us. Without really knowing, I have taken you along with me every step of the way.

While many of your mates like Latin, Astronomy died of old age or simply became irrelevant, you kept renewing yourself and continued giving. When many of today’s brides wither and lose their freshness, your eternal beauty will remain and remind men of your greatness.

They say, the darker the berry, the sweeter the juice. That’s the berry you share: the darker your berry (they call it problem), the sweeter the juice (which is the solution). Those are the pleasant moments which keep one awake at night thinking about you and seeking to understand you.

You made some men look smart while others are utterly lost striving to understand your essence. You thrive between the complete and wholehearted fidelity of those who love you and the ill will of those who choose to hate you. Truly, there’s something unique about you.

I miss you. I miss those beautiful nights where it was just us, with moon and stars playing faraway, and the cranking sounds of crickets providing the beats.

I hope you know that no matter what, you have impacted my life in ways you can’t imagine. I will never, ever forget you. Thank you for always been there.

May your days be bright as the sun. Forever.
